Councilwoman Kaplan to Participate in 3rd Annual Car Free Day Long Island

North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Councilwoman Anna Kaplan announced this week that she will once again be participating in Car Free Day Long Island. The daylong celebration is sponsored by the Town and is part of the Town’s effort to go green and to reduce its carbon footprint. The event will be held on September 22, 2015.

Car Free Day is an International event celebrated in over 1,500 cities in 40 countries in which people are encouraged to get around without cars and instead use alternative transportation such as transit, biking, subway, walking and/or carpooling.

Town officials hope that Car Free Day will encourage residents to consider the negative impact of single-occupancy vehicles. Last year 2,855 Long Islanders pledged to be car free or car-light, which resulted in the avoidance of over 72,000 miles of driving and 36 tons of CO2 emissions.

“I am once again proud to take the ‘Car Free Day’ pledge,” Councilwoman Kaplan said. “I encourage others to literally follow in my footsteps by walking to work, and for those who live too far from work I hope they consider biking, carpooling or taking public transportation.”

To participate in this event, all you have to do is pledge to be car free or car-light on September 22, 2015 by filling out the pledge form on www.CarFreeDayLI.com. Those who take the pledge will automatically be entered for a chance to win great prizes.
