LIRR Project Updates

Port Washington Branch - Track Work 11/5/21-11/8/21

• Beginning on Friday November 5th at 11:59am and continuing until Monday November 8th at 1am, the LIRR will be conducting track work along the Port Washington branch.
This is primarily maintenance work that is designed to ensure our infrastructure is in a state of good repair and is as follows:

- Sperry Rail Testing from Bayside to Port Washington - This is designed to catch any defects in the rail that cant be seen with the naked eye.
- Mud spot remediation, rail joint welding and track surfacing from Great Neck to Port Washington.
- This work will involve several pieces of heavy machinery and will be disruptive to residents in the immediate vicinity.

• We will be closing the underpass at Stony Town Road to vehicular and pedestrian traffic to perform remedial work on our bridge structure. First responders are aware of the closure and alternative routes.

• Saturday and Sunday in both directions between the hours of 12:30am and 9am, there will be no train service between Bayside and Port Washington. For the rest of the day on both Saturday and Sunday, there will be no train service between Great Neck and Port Washington. Free buses (unfortunately due to the shortage of drivers we have to use school buses) will replace train service during those stretches of no train service. We will be staging our crews and equipment out of headquarters at Port Washington Station and Mets Willets Points for this work. Please check our schedules here for more information on service along the Port Washington Branch this weekend.

Switch Removal - Merillon Ave 9/18/21 and 9/19/21

• Special weekend timetables will once again be in effect for all branches this weekend, September 18th-19th, while we finish switch work we began last weekend, September 11th-12th, near Merillon Avenue as part of the LIRR Expansion Project. To allow this work to proceed, the LIRR will suspend Main Line train service between Hicksville and Jamaica.

•  There will be NO train service at New Hyde Park, Merillon Avenue, Mineola, Carle Place and Westbury stations. As an alternative, use the Hempstead Branch, where weekend service will be increased from hourly to half-hourly, or NICE Bus service. LIRR tickets will be cross-honored on the N22/24 bus routes for service between Hicksville and Mineola, and the N40/41 bus routes for service between Mineola and Hempstead. See www.nicebus.com for schedules.

• Between midnight and 5 AM, the LIRR Expansion Project team will provide shuttle buses stopping at Mineola and Hicksville as an alternative for customers at these two Main Line stations when NICE Bus service is unavailable.

• Oyster Bay trains will operate every two hours. All trains originate and terminate at East Williston Station. Take free LIRR shuttle buses between East Williston, Mineola, and Hempstead, where train service will be available every half hour, or use the Port Washington Branch.

• As mentioned previously, service on the Hempstead Branch will be increased from hourly to half hourly to provide alternative service for affected customers.

•  Huntington/Port Jefferson/Ronkonkoma Branches: Westbound train service terminates at Hicksville. Transfer to a diesel shuttle train stopping at Bethpage and Babylon, where electric train service will resume. For eastbound customers, reverse the process by traveling to Babylon, boarding a diesel shuttle train stopping at Bethpage and Hicksville, where electric train service will resume. Please allow up to 60 minutes of additional travel time.

• Bethpage Station: Bethpage Station will be served solely by a diesel-powered shuttle train with bi-level cars that will operate between Hicksville, Bethpage, and Babylon. Electric trains will not stop at Bethpage Station. Westbound customers should wait on the eastbound platform (Track 2, Platform B), and board a shuttle train to Babylon. At Babylon, transfer to westbound express trains to Penn Station that make limited stops, including Jamaica. Eastbound customers should wait on the westbound platform (Track 1, Platform A), and board a shuttle train to Hicksville. At Hicksville, transfer to an eastbound electric train for service to stations from Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma. Please plan ahead and allow additional time to safely cross the Stewart Avenue grade crossing when getting to and from the opposite station platform.

Sperry Testing - Bayside to Port Washington

• From approximately 1:30am on Sunday August 22nd until 11:45am , service from Bayside to Port Washington will be suspended in both directions due to Sperry Rail Testing.
o This is part of our annual track maintenance program which ensures our infrastructure is in a state of good repair.

• This will result in several cancelled trains and we will be providing buses to accommodate our customers.
o Westbound customers will board buses/vans at stations from Port Washington to Douglaston; exit at Bayside and transfer for train service to points west. Buses/vans will depart up to 40 minutes earlier than usual train times.
o Eastbound customers will exit at Bayside and transfer to buses/vans for service to stations from Douglaston to Port Washington. Please plan for up to 40 minutes of additional travel time.

• Part of Sperry testing involves catching defects in the rail, and when possible our crews will address these on site. As such, while the Sperry train itself does not cause much noise, any potential remedial work that is undertaken will, so there could be extra noise in the vicinity of our outage.

Port Washington Branch: Concrete Tie Installation - Bayside to Great Neck

The LIRR will begin concrete tie and rail replacement on the Port Washington branch this Tuesday July 6th until approximately Sunday August 29th. To support this work, one track will be taken out of service 24/7.

The work will proceed as follows:
• The beginning stages (July 6th – 12th) will involve ancillary prep work throughout the work zone.
• On approximately July 14th we anticipate beginning heavy construction, which will take approximately one week.
• Once that is complete, we will restore the track back to service (hopefully by July 30th) and move to the next track.
• To accommodate this work, we will have one track out of service between Great Neck and Bayside.
• We will primarily be using the Little Neck Parkway grade crossing to get most of our equipment onto the tracks, but will still have larger pieces of equipment staged at our yard in Bayside. We also will have two headquarters for this work, the Little Neck station and the Bayside yard.

*Work is weather dependent, dates are subject to change to take advantage of favorable conditions

Port Washington Branch - Bayside to Great Neck

On Saturday the June 26th and Sunday the June 27th, the LIRR will be performing prep work for our upcoming concrete tie and rail replacement on the Port Washington Branch from Bayside to Great Neck. The work will begin at around midnight on Friday and end around midnight on Sunday.
Most of the prep work will be taking place in between Little Neck and Great Neck Stations, with some additional work to occur around Douglaston to address a track condition there.

To accommodate this work, we will move from half hourly to hourly service on the Port Washington branch for its duration.

This will conclude the majority of our prep work, which is usually the most disruptive aspect of concrete tie replacement, and allow for us to proceed with the actual construction phase (from July 6th to August 29th) much more seamlessly.

*Work is weather dependent, dates are subject to change to take advantage of favorable conditions

Port Washington Branch - Bayside to Great Neck

On Saturdays May 15th and again on May 22nd, the LIRR will be performing a rail drop on the Port Washington branch in anticipation for upcoming track work on the branch. The work will begin at approximately 12am each Saturday morning and end at approximately 12am Sunday morning each weekend.

Crews will be working from west to east, starting in Bayside Station and ending in Great Neck. The Little Neck Parkway grade crossing will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic for work east.

MTAPD will be on site to assist with the temporary closure, which is currently scheduled to occur between 8am and 12pm. This closure is being coordinated with FDNY, NYPD and NYC DoT to ensure safe access along the other entry and egress road, 39th Ave/Sandhill Road.

Once  work engines safely clear the crossing, it will be reopened. There will be no westbound train service at Little Neck, Douglaston, Auburndale, Broadway and Murray Hill. Westbound passengers at Little Neck and Douglaston will board buses for service to Bayside, where train service will resume. They will be clearing both the north and south sides of the track.

This work involves clear cutting ground cover and also removing any over head and hanging branches that may pose a safety or operational hazard. Work usually commences around 7am and ends around 3 to 4pm. We anticipate this work taking approximately one to two weeks, but could take longer if we have to cancel due to weather.

LIRR Issues New Train Schedules - In Effect January 25

The Long Island Rail Road today posted train schedules that will take effect on Monday, Jan. 25, that are available online and via the LIRR Train Time app and the MYmta app. As announced last month, service changes – which will be limited to peak hours on nine of the LIRR’s 11 branches – will align train service more closely with current ridership levels. They will allow the LIRR to operate more efficiently and meet levels of demand that have been reduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Select peak hour trains will be lengthened to better accommodate riders and stops will be added strategically to ensure convenient connections.

Service between Floral Park and Hicksville both Main Line tracks will be taken out of service on Saturday, September 28th and one Main Line track will be out of service on Sunday, September 29.

On Saturday, there will be no train service to or from New Hyde Park, Merillon Avenue, Westbury or Carle Place, with service provided to Mineola only on trains operating to or from Oyster Bay. In an effort to accommodate customers who may be using other branches during these weekends, the LIRR is doubling service on the Hempstead Branch in addition to running normal (but adjusted) schedules on the Babylon, Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Montauk, Port Washington and West Hempstead Branches, as well as between Ronkonkoma and Greenport.

LIRR tickets will be cross-honored on the N40/N41 NICE bus routes from the Mineola Intermodal Center to the Hempstead bus terminal. In addition, LIRR tickets will be cross-honored on the N22/N24 NICE Bus routes for LIRR customers traveling between Mineola and Hicksville. Visit www.nicebus.com for schedules.

On Sunday, service along the Main Line at New Hyde Park, Merillon Avenue, Westbury, Carle Place and Mineola will resume, while Huntington/Port Jefferson trains will operate less frequently. Ronkonkoma trains will also make some stops at Mineola.

No Train Service Between New Hyde Park and Hicksville - August 24 & 25

Over the weekend of August 24-25, the grade crossing at Covert Avenue in the Village of New Hyde Park will be eliminated and replaced with a newly constructed bridge that will hold three tracks, along with a two-lanegrade-separated underpass and pedestrian sidewalk.

Please plan ahead. Special weekend timetables will be in effect for ALL branches on Saturday and Sunday, August 24-25.

-The construction team will provide cones, flagmen and signage at the work site to minimize interruptions and to direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic

Cherry Lane Bridge in Carle Place

On the weekend of June 1-2, the Cherry Lane Bridge in Carle Place will be replaced as part of the LIRR Expansion Project. The new bridge at Cherry Lane will be wider, with a third bay to support the Main Line’s future third track. It is expected to improve train service by reducing the potential for the bridge to be struck by overheight trucks, incidents that temporarily cause trains to operate at slow speeds. The new bridge will have a height of 14 feet, an increase of one foot, two inches over the current height of 12 feet, 10 inches.

As a result of the project, there will be no train service between Mineola and Hicksville on the weekend of June 1-2.

LIRR Limited Service Updates - Feb 27

With crews working around the clock to rerail damaged train cars and repair damaged track following a train/motor vehicle collision in Westbury on Tuesday evening, the Long Island Rail Road plans to operate the Port Jefferson Branch and Ronkonkoma Branch on a reduced evening rush hour schedule. The railroad will boost service on the Babylon Branch by adding four additional trains during this time.

On the Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma Branches, the LIRR plans to cancel 12 eastbound trains. The specific trains to be cancelled will be announced by the LIRR service alerts on MYmta app, mta.info website, email, text, and social media, as well as announcements at stations. The list of cancelled trains follows within this press release. Westbound (reverse-peak) service on those branches will remain suspended.

With the potential for crowding and delays on the Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma Branches, the LIRR continues to encourage customers to travel via alternate branches if possible, including the Babylon, Montauk, Oyster Bay and Hempstead Branches.

For this PM rush hour, the LIRR has increased the frequency of trains stopping at Hicksville Station. All Port Jefferson trains will make all stops New Hyde Park through Port Jefferson. All Patchogue trains will make all stops to Patchogue, Speonk trains will make all stops to Speonk, and Montauk trains will make all stops to Montauk.

Rerailing of Cars and Repair of Tracks

On Wednesday afternoon, crews uncoupled six undamaged cars from the train that remains at the scene of the collision and pulled them away from the scene. This removal will allow crews to concentrate on rerailing the two damaged cars. The rerailing work will resume after the evening rush hour and continue overnight.

Inspections have found extensive damage to infrastructure including rails, signal equipment and third rail underneath the train that remains at the scene. Crews caution that there is potentially more damage that may be revealed once the cars are removed.

The LIRR will be able to restore full train service after the damaged cars are removed and all track repairs are made. The status of the Thursday morning rush hour will depend on the extent of the track damage and the difficulty of re-railing the cars.

Canceled Trains

These trains will not operate on Wednesday, February 27.

Port Jefferson Branch
The 2:29 p.m. train from Penn due in Hicksville at 3:17 p.m.

·         From 12:25 a.m. Saturday, May 19, 2018 through 12 a.m. Monday, May 21 service on the Port Washington Branch will be reduced while LIRR crews perform Positive Train Control testing.

·        LIRR crews will replace ties necessitating bus service to substitute for trains between Great Neck and Port Washington from 12:54 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. on Saturday, May 19. This work will harden the area’s rail infrastructure to ensure safe and reliable train service.   East Shore Road in Manhasset will have the two interior lanes (one in each direction) closed off under the railroad bridge for motorist safety.  MTAPD will be on site to assist.   Tje LIRR is doing emergency repairs on the bridge above and want to prevent any accidents involving falling stone.

Past Updates:

On the weekend of December 2, the LIRR will be delivering and installing a new substation at Port Washington. This new substation will replace a substation that was originally installed in 1948. The new, upgraded substation will provide traction power for Port Washington Branch trains, supporting reliable service and addressing current and future service demands for this LIRR branch.  This operation will start on Friday, December 1 and end on Monday, December 4.
The work mentioned will require:

Temporary Street Closure: The Intersection of South Bayles Avenue & Davis Avenue
Friday, December 1: 9AM to 6PM
Saturday, December 2: 6AM to 6PM
Sunday, December 3: 6AM to 6PM

Parking Restrictions: No parking along South Bayles Ave between Davis Avenue and Willowdale Avenue
Friday, December 1: 9 AM to 6PM
Saturday, December 2: 6AM to 6PM
Sunday, December 3: 6AM to 6PM

Residents and Businesses with property adjoining the closure area on South Bayles Ave and Davis Avenue will have access to their respective properties. During the installation residents and businesses adjacent to the substation may experience temporary construction noise. There will be no disruption of train service.

Westbury Station - Post Avenue Bridge

The new Post Avenue Bridge will be installed in Westbury on the weekend of Saturday, October 21 through Sunday, October 22.   The new bridge will replace a deteriorated span that has been in service for 102 years.   The new span will increase clearance above the roadway by more than two feet. It will be safer for vehicular traffic, meeting the latest standards and requirements of the New York State Department of Transportation.  This will reduce the number of instances in which oversized trucks strike and damage the bridge, and prevent resulting train delays for thousands of LIRR customers. Demolition of the old structure and installation of the new bridge will necessitate a track outage and subsequent busing between Hicksville and Mineola from Saturday, October 21, 12:15 a.m. through Monday, October 23, 12:40 a.m.  Commuters are encouraged to consider traveling on south shore branches that weekend to avoid delays.  Special timetables dated October 21 – 22 will be available or at www.mta.info/lirr.  To ensure the safety of the community, Post Avenue, will be closed between Railroad Avenue and Union Avenue from Friday, October 20, 8:00 p.m. through Monday, October 23, 6:00 a.m.  Additionally, beginning on Thursday, October 19, through Monday, October 23, 40 additional parking spots from the South Lot will be temporarily utilized.

Westbury Station - Parking Changes South Lot

The Post Avenue Bridge is being replaced at the end of October, but pre-construction work and demolition of the old bridge will require the use of additional parking spaces near the west end of the commuter parking lot along Railroad Avenue.  Effective August 14, 2017 a total of 89 spaces will be unavailable for commuter parking.  The LIRR anticipates the restoration of approximately 58 parking spaces once the new bridge span is put in place in October, with the remaining 31 spaces to be restored for commuters upon completion of the Bridge Replacement Project in early December.

Additional Parking Restrictions: August 19-28
Parking availability will be even more restricted between Saturday, August 19 and Monday, August 28 to accommodate buses bringing golf fans to/from the Northern Trust PGA Tour at the Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury.

Summer Updates

Due to emergency repairs, there will be some disruption on the LIRR to Penn Station from July 10 - September 1. The LIRR’s plan provides a seat for every customer potentially affected by the summer changes:

·         We’ve added three new trains into Penn, and added approximately 36 cars to additional Penn-bound trains.

·         MTA is offering free morning subway transfers at key locations of Hunterspoint, Atlantic Terminal and Jamaica for all LIRR ticketholders.

·         LIRR ticket holders can also take advantage of a ticket discount averaging 25% for avoiding Penn Station and instead going to the key transfer points of Atlantic Terminal and Hunterspoint.

·         A new network of 200 buses will provide LIRR ticket holders with service from Long Island commuter parking lots to convenient locations in midtown Manhattan. Buses will run Monday through Friday from 6-10 a.m., and 3-7 p.m. and are free for LIRR ticket holders.

·         The MTA will also offer ferry service, available free to all LIRR customers who present a valid LIRR ticket. Ferries will run from 6-10 a.m. and 3-7 p.m. and will be able to accommodate nearly 2,300 riders.

The LIRR has been working hard to spread the word to their customers about these options.

Customers can visit the LIRR new website, LIRRSummerSchedule.com, or call 718-217-LIRR to learn more about the new schedule and routes.

MTA Alerts & texts and the Train Time app will also keep customers up-to-date and minimize delays.

LIRR Expansion

GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES MAJOR STEPS FORWARD FOR LIRR EXPANSION PROJECT Officials to hold 4 public meetings to detail plans for the environmental review process and hear public comments, continuing Governor’s commitment to unprecedented community engagement No residential property acquisitions needed for project Governor also commits to expedited modifications to train crossings in project corridor to improve safety, reduce noise and minimize traffic congestion New website and information center launched to help public learn more about the proposal and provide feedback Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced major steps forward for the Long Island Rail Road Expansion Project, including a continued commitment to community outreach by holding four public meetings, expedited modifications to all train crossings along the project route, and increased transparency with the release of a new project scoping report, website and community center.
“A third track on the main line is crucial to the future of Long Island,” said Governor Cuomo. “This project will make the LIRR more reliable for millions of customers, while also eliminating multiple dangerous train crossings along the main line. Our proposal will ensure that we can continue to improve the quality of life and grow the economy in the region, and I encourage New Yorkers to learn more about how we’re working to build a brighter future for Long Island.

Extensive Public Engagement

Since Governor Cuomo unveiled the proposal in January, a project team composed of his executive staff along with key MTA, LIRR and DOT officials have worked non-stop to refine the plan in close consultation with elected officials, property owners, business and civic leaders and other major stakeholders.

To date, more than 80 meetings have been held with stakeholders, including the mayors of the Villages of Floral Park, New Hyde Park, Garden City, Mineola and Westbury, state legislators, local civic associations and school boards, chambers of commerce, officials from the Towns of Hempstead, North Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Babylon, Islip and Brookhaven as well as Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The Governor also met personally with the mayors to discuss the proposal and address concerns.

While only one public meeting is required, the four public meetings announced today will offer the public direct access to the project team and provide residents, business owners and other stakeholders an opportunity to discuss the project and comment on the scope of work needed, which will result in an environmental impact statement to be released late this summer.

Increased Transparency

Reaffirming his commitment to transparency, the Governor today released a detailed draft scoping document that outlines options for modifying the crossings and the proposed environmental analysis. The project has also launched www.AModernLI.com – a website where the public can learn more about the project and provide direct input.

The release of the scoping document comes nearly three weeks ahead of the first public hearing, ensuring that local residents, business owners, and elected officials have ample time to review the proposal. Governor Cuomo is committed to ensuring an extensive degree of public engagement about the project, and state officials will be holding four separate public hearings throughout the affected corridor. Those hearings will be held on:
•Tuesday, May 24, 2016 from 11 am to 2 pm at The Inn at New Hyde Park, located at 214 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park, NY 11040.
•Tuesday, May 24, 2016 from 6 pm to 9 pm at Hofstra University, in the Mack Student Center’s Student Theatre, located at 1000 Fulton Ave, Hempstead, NY 11549.
•Wednesday, May 25, 2016 from 11 am to 2 pm at the ”Yes We Can” Community Center, located at 141 Garden St, Westbury, NY 11590.
•Wednesday, May 25, 2016 from 6 pm to 9 pm at Antun’s, located at 244 W. Old Country Road, Hicksville, NY 11801.

MTA officials will also open a LIRR Expansion Project Information Center beginning May 6, located on the south platform at the Mineola Train Station. This information center will provide opportunities for people to review the scoping document and ask questions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11 am to 7pm, Thursdays and Fridays from 7am to 3pm, and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm.

Improving Grade Crossing Safety

The Governor has already committed to modifying all seven street-level train crossings in the project corridor but will now also do this on an expedited basis in order to dramatically improve safety for both vehicles and pedestrians; to sharply reduce noise by train horns and bells; and to reduce severe traffic congestion caused by crossing gates being down for prolonged periods of time during peak travel times.

MTA Chairman and CEO Tom Prendergast said: “We all know grade crossings are a chronic problem, complicating traffic flow and presenting round-the-clock safety challenges. The Governor’s commitment to speeding up the construction to solve crossing issues along the project route is welcome news for everyone.”

The draft scoping report presents a number of key safety-enhancing options for train crossing improvements along the project’s 9.8 mile route. These construction improvements would also take place on an expedited timetable – with each grade crossing project completed in nine months or less – to significantly ease local traffic congestion.

The train crossings along the LIRR Main Line segment between Floral Park and Hicksville that will be modified are: Covert Ave., South 12th St. and New Hyde Park Rd., all in New Hyde Park; Main St. and Willis Ave., in Mineola; School St. in Westbury and Urban Ave. in New Cassel.

About the Project

With just two tracks to service Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson, Hempstead, Oyster Bay and some Montauk Branch trains, the Railroad has historically been hindered by congestion during peak travel periods and frequent delays, whether caused by a disabled train, a track condition, a medical emergency or a trespasser. A third track will bring other improvements, including infrastructure upgrades at LIRR stations and parking facilities, the construction of retaining walls along portions of the corridor to minimize property impacts and the upgrading of railroad signal systems, substations, culverts, interlocking, crossovers, sidings, track bed, power systems and communications systems.

This LIRR Expansion will support current service plans, and is an important component to the future success of the LIRR’s East Side Access Project, taking Long Island commuters to Grand Central Station and the East Side of Manhattan for the first time. Together the projects are expected to cut commuting time for many customers by up to 20 minutes in each direction.

LIRR Port Washington and Manhasset Soil Remediation Project

It recently came to our attention that the Long Island Rail Road plans to conduct soil remediation projects at several locations in the Town of North Hempstead. I have expressed my dismay to LIRR officials that this project was only brought to my attention following a Newsday article.

These clean-ups-at the LIRR substation in Manhasset and Port Washington-are coordinated with the New York State Department of Environmental Control. I am making the DEC Fact Sheets about this project available here on our website (see link below) so that you can be better informed about what these projects entail.

I have asked LIRR officials to please contact my office immediately when any future projects are scheduled that affect the Town of North Hempstead and its residents. If you have any further questions, please call 311.

Sincerely,
Judi Bosworth, Supervisor
