North Hempstead Town Board Round Up
Board approves use of digital CO detectors for places of public assembly

North Hempstead, NY – The North Hempstead Town Board held their public meeting at Town Hall on April 22. Here were some of the highlights:

Carbon Monoxide Digital Detectors Approved
North Hempstead Town Supervisor Bosworth and the Town Council on April 22 unanimously approved the required use of digital carbon monoxide detectors in places of assembly (0-50 people) and public assembly (50 or more people). The resolution was amended following an April 1 hearing to include detectors that provide digital readings of carbon monoxide levels that may not reach levels that trigger an alarm. Neal Lewis, executive director of the Sustainability Institute at Molloy College, who spoke at the April 1 hearing, had suggested the council require the digital readers after citing health concerns attributed to low level exposure of carbon monoxide.

“I appreciate Mr. Lewis’ contribution to our April 1 hearing. We listened and acted on his suggestion to require digital detectors,” North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said. “I believe that this change in the Town Code will help save lives by warning of dangers long before an alarm is sounded.”

Overlay District Amendment Tabled
The board also tabled a proposal to amend a local law aimed at eliminating illegal rentals in New Cassel. The residential “overlay district” affects approximately 1,500 homes in that area and bans basement bathrooms with more than two fixtures; outside stairway entrances to basements; basement bedrooms; and more than six feet in any horizontal dimension, or separate closet space.

Councilwoman Viviana Russell stated that town officials plan to initiate a committee to study the issue, comprised of homeowners, community leaders, government officials and other interested parties.
