Town Receives Nearly $6M in Federal Funding for North Hempstead Beach Park Parking Lot
Repairs necessary after Superstorm Sandy damage

Port Washington, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth was pleased to announce that the Town has secured over $5.8 million in federal funding for permanent repairs of the asphalt substructure of a parking lot at North Hempstead Beach Park. The parking lot was used as a Temporary Debris Storage and Deduction Site during and after Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

“This FEMA funding will enable us to build a sturdier and more durable parking lot, using a heavier grade asphalt so that North Hempstead Beach Park can be used as an additional debris management site, should the need arise,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “With an increase in extreme weather events, it is critical that we rebuild and improve our infrastructure with an eye towards storm resiliency. I’d like to thank U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand for advocating for the Town and its taxpayers who are still recovering from Superstorm Sandy.”

Senator Schumer was equally satisfied that the Town was able to secure funding to repair the site.

“North Hempstead Beach Park served as a much-needed debris storage site after the storm, and this funding will go towards repairing the damage done to the pavement,” said Senator Schumer. “This federal funding will help make sure local residents are not entirely on the hook for permanent repairs made to the Town of North Hempstead’s parks and infrastructure following Sandy.”

The Town of North Hempstead hired contractors to repair the asphalt parking lot including the cement curb and pavement markings. The Mitigation proposal states that the Town of North Hempstead will thicken the pavement layers, insert geo-synthetic pavement interlayers between the pavement layers and reroute the electrical and water lines.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding is being provided under authority of Section 406 of the Robert T. Stafford Act. For more information, please call 311.
