Town Board Round Up: Board Approves Law Prohibiting Leaving Animals Unattended in Sweltering Cars without Proper Ventilation

North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board unanimously approved an amendment to the Town Code making it a violation for anyone to leave an unattended animal in a vehicle without sufficient ventilation or water for a prolonged period of time. The amendment is intended to prevent animal owners from leaving dogs and other animals in their vehicles, especially in hot weather, which can result in suffering and even death. Violators could face a $250 fine or imprisonment for 15 days or both.

The Board also held a public hearing, but no vote, on a proposal that would limit the number of garage sales to four times annually, in order to deter anyone from holding them too frequently, and operating a “small business.”The proposed law first needs approval by the Nassau County Planning Commission.

Also approved at the meeting:

  • An agreement with Cashin Associates, PC for engineering services for the Stepping Stones Lighthouse restoration. The $50,780 contract would fund an underwater survey to evaluate the lighthouse foundation and current sea floor conditions, and to identify the design parameters for a new dock.
  • An agreement with Bayles Garden Center and Nursery for an application of environmentally friendly pest control products at Harbor Hills Park.
  • An intermunicipal agreement with the incorporated Village of Manorhaven for salt storage.
  • The award of a bid for the replacement of the roof at Town Hall.

The next meeting of the Town Board will be held on August 25 at 7:30 p.m.
