North Hempstead Partners with Sustainable L.I. To Expand Community Garden at “Yes We Can”

North Hempstead, NY – Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Council Member Viviana Russell and the Town of North Hempstead Board are pleased to announce that Sustainable Long Island (SLI) has secured funds to expand the Community Garden at the Town’s “Yes We Can” Community Center in New Cassel.

With the help of SLI, the “Yes We Can” Community Center Community Garden will have four to five new garden beds added to the existing five. Two of the new garden beds will be ADA-compliant and therefore wheelchair accessible. SLI will be providing the wood, plants, volunteer oversight and a gardening basics workshop.

“The Community Garden provides a wonderful hands-on experience to our residents to learn more about gardening in their own backyard. The Town is very grateful to the members of Sustainable Long Island for securing these funds to expand the garden,” said Supervisor Bosworth.

Council Member Viviana Russel remarked, “I am pleased that Sustainable Long Island is supporting us in our mission to expand the community gardens at “Yes We Can”. This is a great opportunity for residents of all ages to join together and make our community a better place for all.”

The garden is located on the available portion of green space adjacent to the parking lot on the southeast side of the “Yes We Can” Community Center (144 Garden Street in New Cassel) and was originally intended for a garden when the building was first constructed.

For more information please call 311 or (516)-869-6311.
