Town BTDC Announces Winners of Downtown Beautification Grants

More than $34k awarded to local organizations to stimulate $93k in projects


North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Business and Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) Chairwoman Judi Bosworth and Executive Director Kim Kaiman announced this week that the BTDC awarded six not-for-profit organizations and business improvement districts in the Town awarded $34,000 in grant funding as part of their Downtown Beautification Program.

The funding will assist with more than $93,000 worth of projects undertaken by the following organizations:
• Council District 1
o Pearls and Ivy Foundation of Westbury, Inc.; Prospect Avenue Revitalization: $5,000 (Project cost: $10,000)
o Westbury Business Improvement District; Post Avenue Beautification: $5,000 (Project cost: $10,000)
• Council District 4
o Manhasset Chamber of Commerce; Plandome Road Beautification: $10,000 (Project cost: $25,845.00)
• Council District 5
o Great Neck Plaza Business Improvement District; Great Neck Plaza Streetscape Improvements: $7,043.20 (Project cost: $30,000)
o Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce; Welcome to New Hyde Park Landscape Design: $2,956.80 (Project cost: $8,400)
• Council District 6
o Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington; Anchoring Main Street with Beauty & History: $4,465 (Project cost: $8,930)


The Downtown Beautification Program is a unique initiative designed to assist the Town’s chambers of commerce and civic associations in the revitalization of commercial and mixed use downtown districts. Funds may be utilized for streetscape improvements such as tree planters and other landscaping, as well as street furniture, trash receptacles and signage.

“In order to maintain the vibrancy of North Hempstead, we must continue to focus on restoring the economic vitality of our downtowns and Main Streets,” Chairwoman Bosworth said. “The distribution of these funds to spearhead six much needed downtown revitalization projects, will help to achieve that goal.”

Members of the Town Council expressed were thrilled with the news of this funding going to aid businesses in their home districts.

Council Member Viviana Russell (District 1) said of the funding for Prospect Avenue and Post Avenue, “I am thrilled to continue the beautification of two main thoroughfares and downtowns in my district. I thank the BTDC for their contributions to this effort as we continue to build walkable main streets in District 1.”

Manhasset’s Plandome Road will undergo a facelift with the help of $10,000 from the BTDC. Council Member Anna Kaplan (District 4) said of the project, “I am excited to work with the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce as we take on this project that will provide aesthetic improvements to Plandome Road while acting as an economic driver for our community.”

Projects in two different neighborhoods in District 5 will take place, both in Great Neck and New Hyde Park. “Enhancing the beauty of downtown Great Neck, and building up the landscape of New Hyde Park are very important to me, and I am overjoyed at the prospect of these upcoming projects,” Council Member Lee Seeman said of the $10,000 worth of grants provided for her district.

Council Member Dina De Giorgio (District 6) said, “It is wonderful to work with the BTDC and Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington to continue our beautification efforts on Main Street.”
