North Hempstead Offers Important Info on Hurricane Preparedness in Mandarin and Spanish

North Hempstead, NY – With hurricane season rapidly approaching once again, Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board would like to remind any Spanish or Mandarin-speaking residents that subtitled versions of the Town’s Hurricane Preparedness Public Service Announcement (PSA) is available online at www.northhempsteadny.gov/ready.

“It’s critically important that everyone is able to get information about hurricane preparedness, as we enter in to the 2016-17 hurricane season,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “These subtitled versions of the Town public service announcement will reach an audience of residents who speak Spanish and Mandarin and provide them with useful facts.”

Last summer, North Hempstead partnered with the Adelphi University Center for Health Innovation (CHI) to create a PSA aimed at informing Town residents about steps to take in order to be prepared for man-made and natural disasters, including hurricanes. This was accomplished with the help of a $7,500 grant from Adelphi as part of their Long Island Resilient Communities Grant, which was awarded in 2014.

The one-minute PSA offers a somewhat satirical look at hurricane preparation, while addressing the many items that should be included in an emergency preparedness kit, including bottled water, medications, flashlight, radio, tools, batteries, matches, candles and a go-bag with personal items. It is available in three languages: English, Spanish, and Mandarin.

Serving over 222,000 people, the Town of North Hempstead’s governing body is headed by the Town Supervisor, Judi Bosworth and six Town Board members: Viviana L. Russell, Peter J. Zuckerman, Angelo P. Ferrara, Anna M. Kaplan, Lee R. Seeman and Dina M. De Giorgio. The Town Clerk is Wayne Wink and the Receiver of Taxes is Charles Berman.
