Glenwood Fire Co. District to Vote Dec. 13 on Adoption of Pension-like Benefits
North Hempstead, NY – Residents within the Glenwood Fire Protection District will head to the polls on December 13 to consider voting to adopt two propositions: an amendment to an existing pension-like benefit program for volunteer firefighters, also called a Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP); and the proposed formation of a joint municipal sponsoring board. The Glenwood Fire Co. provides fire protection services to Town of North Hempstead residents living in Glenwood Landing, as well as to residents in the Town of Oyster Bay, the Village of Roslyn Harbor and the Village of Old Brookville.
The LOSAP benefits entitle volunteer firefighters who reach the eligibility age of 55 to a payment of $20 per month for each year of firefighting service. The maximum number of years for which volunteers can receive credit is 37 years. If the proposed amendment is adopted, the volunteer firefighters will be able to continue to accrue LOSAP points beyond the age of 55, subject to the 37 year cap. The maximum monthly payment after 37 years is $740.
Under the terms of the LOSAP, firefighters must meet attendance requirements for fires, rescue calls and other department activities to be eligible for the benefit.
Voting will take place at the firehouse, located at the Glenwood Hook & Ladder, Engine & Hose Company, 72 Grove Street in Glenwood Landing from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more information please call the Town’s 311 Call Center.
