Solid Waste Management Authority Going Cash Free

North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, the Town Board, and the Town’s Solid Waste Management Authority (SWMA) would like to inform residents that SWMA is now accepting credit cards and debit cards for purchases. Beginning on January 1, 2017 SWMA will no longer accept cash or check payments for products or services.

This new cash free regulation will apply to all SWMA-related purchases, including recycling bins, as well as for residential drop-off of waste. SWMA will accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express. This regulation also applies to any SWMA-related purchases made at alternate facilities such as Michael J. Tully Park in New Hyde Park and “Yes We Can” Community in Westbury.

The change to a cash free system is a part of Supervisor Bosworth’s initiative to reduce cash payments in the Town. In the past year, many departments have implemented non-cash payments and have begun to transition over to credit and debit only. For example, the Animal Shelter begun accepting credit cards and has now eliminated cash as a method of payment, the Building Department is in the process of implementing a maximum “cash” transaction limit and Parks and Recreation has restricted the services for which cash can be used as a method of payment.
