New Greenhouse at Clark Botanic Garden Expands Number & Selection of Plants

North Hempstead, NY – While spring remains fickle with its temperatures, there are over a dozen varieties of coleus, banana trees that reach the ceiling, golden marigolds, hanging geraniums and more waiting to make their public debut at Clark Botanic Garden. They are snug inside the new 4,200-square-foot greenhouse.

North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Council Member Peter Zuckerman and the Town Board are pleased to announce that the new greenhouse at Clark Botanic Garden is now functional and home to thousands of plants that will soon be used all around the Garden’s 12 acres. The greenhouse was funded in part by $556,000 in capital funds from the Town and $250,000 in Department of State of New York grant funding from former Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel.

“The new greenhouse now enables us to grow large numbers and varieties of native plants to showcase around the 12-acre garden,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “We are now able to overwinter larger, tropical plants, like banana trees, and to re-introduce them into the garden over the warmer months. The diversity of plants will enhance the experience here at Clark for all our visitors.”

The greenhouse has two separate sections for warm and cold control. Currently it is now being used for propagating, growing, and overwintering various plants for use in the botanic garden. There are two heating settings for each room and four cooling settings. Heating is attained from the sun and two ceiling-mounted gas heaters in each room. The room is cooled through roof and wall vents and fans.

“This new greenhouse gives our expert staff the opportunity to expand Clark’s collection of plants for the public’s enjoyment,” said Council Member Zuckerman. “It’s a state-of-the-art addition to this beautiful botanic garden.”

Although the new greenhouse will not be open for public display, it will enable a variety of new plants to be grown which will all be on display throughout the garden.

Clark Botanic Garden was recently included in ProFlowers list of the 15 Best Botanical Gardens in the state, which was based on the garden’s educational programs, unique plant collections and reputation for providing excellent customer care to visitors. Clark Botanic Garden is located at 193 I U Willets Road in Albertson. For more information about Clark Botanic Garden please call 311 or (516)-869-6311 from outside the Town.
