Learn How to Preserve, Clean & Repair a Historic Gravestone

Town to Hold Seminar on preservation techniques on July 7 at Monfort Cemetery in Port Washington

North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead is partnering with the Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission to hold a workshop on historic gravestone preservation on Saturday, July 7 at 10 a.m. at the Monfort Cemetery in Port Washington. The workshop will be led by Jonathan Appell, a prominent gravestone conservator and is funded by the Town of North Hempstead and Howard and Roz Kroplick. Mr. Kroplick is the Town’s Historian.

Participants will include Long Island historians, members of Long Island's Historical Societies and all with an interest in historic preservation.

“Anyone with an interest in historic preservation should take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn from a leading expert in the field,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “I’d like to thank our wonderful Town Historian Howard Kroplick for coordinating this fascinating workshop with the town.”

Howard notes: “Inspired by the Pomeroy Foundation historical marker installation celebration at the Monfort Cemetery last month, this workshop is the next step in restoring and preserving gravestones in this important town landmark and other Long Island historic cemeteries. The workshop will begin with a tour of the Monfort Cemetery, one of the most the most historically significant burying grounds on Long Island. Jonathan Appell, a leader in the field of monument conservation, will then share his expertise in gravestone restoration and preservation.”

Participants will learn how to preserve, clean and repair gravestones. During the course of the workshop, a group of gravestones and monuments will be conserved, stabilized and cleaned. This group will represent all of the common gravestone preservation repair techniques.

All with an interest in historic preservation are invited to attend. Registration is required, please RSVP to Howard@Kroplick.com .

The Monfort Cemetery is located on a hill adjacent to a walkway between the St. John Place entrance to Paul Schreiber High School and the Port Washington Post Office (1051 Port Washington Boulevard). Suggested parking is the lot behind the post office.
