RESIDENTS’ QUALITY OF LIFE THREATENED

TOWN JOINS SCHUMER TO FIGHT LOW-FLYING HELICOPTERS

Manhasset, NY –Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman announced Friday that he has been working under the radar with US Senator Chuck Schumer to address the ever growing problem of low-flying helicopters bombarding Long Island communities across the northern peninsulas.

Supervisor Kaiman, along with government officials at every level, have barraged the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with residents’ complaints and concerns regarding excessive noises and shaking of homes created by low-flying helicopters. Elected officials agree these disturbances pose serious quality-of-life issues to coastal neighborhoods across Long Island, particularly in the northern parts of Great Neck and Port Washington.

According to Supervisor Kaiman, “residents are frustrated and expect us at the local level to address this issue. We can only be successful, however, if we partner with our federal representatives who have the ability to negotiate with the FAA in order to come up with guidelines that will protect our residents.”

Kaiman noted that the issue became most noticeable at the beginning of the summer and has carried on ever since. Kaiman reached out to the FAA as early as May, and has been in discussion with Senator Schumer’s office throughout the summer. Kaiman most recently raised the issue at a Town Supervisors Association luncheon last week. The Town Supervisor’s association agreed to discuss the issue at its December meeting.

Senator Schumer recently acknowledged Supervisor Kaiman’s work on this issue in a letter reprinted here.
