North Hempstead Awards Earth Day Participants

Port Washington, NY North Hempstead marked the end of the Town’s annual month-long Earth Day celebration by honoring the winners of the 2008 Earth Day School Outreach Program at Harbor Links Clubhouse, May 20th and May 21st. Over five hundred residents gathered to congratulate the winners for volunteering to pick up trash and clear debris from their local schools and communities. North Hempstead’s School Outreach Program aims to build a working relationship between local government and schools by offering opportunities and solutions on improving the environment to educators and students.

“North Hempstead continues to partner with local schools to inspire and educate our youth on the importance of preserving and protecting our environment,” said Supervisor Jon Kaiman. “I commend all participants in the Town’s annual month-long Earth Day celebration and congratulate all the winners of the ‘2008 Keeping it Green!’ School Outreach Program.”

The winning students ranged in age from Kindergarten through High School and were each presented with a certificate and a juvenile pine tree to plant in honor of their commitment to environmental stewardship. Over the last two months the environmental outreach team has visited many schools throughout the Town, educating young people about how they can help take care of the earth.
