North Hempstead Highway Crews Prepared to Work Until Roads are Passable
Town Issues Winter Safety Reminders

North Hempstead, NY—With the National Weather Service declaring a winter storm warning for the Town of North Hempstead, Supervisor Jon Kaiman declared that the Town’s Highway Department will work throughout the night to ensure roadways are clear.

“We ask residents to park in their driveways where possible to allow our Highway Department crews to effectively remove snow and ice off the roadways,” said Supervisor Kaiman. “If there are areas that are impassable, we urge residents to call 311 or (516) 869-6311, and report the area to a service representative.”

As many as 100 trucks have been deployed throughout the Town’s 600-plus lane miles of highways, plowing and salting and spreading sand where the surfaces have iced. The plan is to keep repeating the process with a crew of more than a 120 workers until the storm ceases. Before it is all over, North Hempstead will have spread more than 3,000 tons of salt and tens of tons of sand in an effort to make the roads safe for motorists.

North Hempstead’s Public Safety Department also issued the following winter safety reminders and information to ensure our sidewalks are safe for pedestrians:

  • As per town code, starting 4 hours of the last snow fall, every owner, lessee, tenant, occupant or other person in charge of any property within the Town is required to keep their sidewalks clear of snow and ice.
  • North Hempstead’s Code Enforcement Dept. will inspect areas throughout the Town to ensure sidewalks are passable for pedestrians
  • If sidewalks are not maintained to a satisfactory manner, appearance tickets are issued
  • If your business has a parking lot, ensure that you or your contractor does not plow snow to cover handicap spots
  • Even if a business is closed during the snow storm, merchants, person in control or the property owner is responsible for clearing the sidewalk from snow and ice. Failure to do so could result in a Court Appearance Ticket
