Town of North Hempstead to Host Buildings Department Conference

North Hempstead, NY– Committed to reforming North Hempstead’s Buildings Department to meet the expectations of the community while maintaining the codes, Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the Town Board announced that North Hempstead will host a conference aimed at establishing best practices and publicize ongoing improvements.

The April 30 conference will take place at Clubhouse at Harbor Links in Port Washington from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

“The goal is to make the building department more user-friendly,” Supervisor Kaiman said. “We want people to invest in our community but we also want compliance with our building codes to protect the safety of our residents.”

Coming off what Supervisor Kaiman called a “crisis” caused in part by a culture in which the codes were often interpreted differently, the Buildings Department came under restructuring with an eye on making it a model.

The precedent-setting conference is the culmination of tweaks and improvements resulting from a series of brainstorming sessions over the past months in which industry professionals including architects, developers, and real estate attorneys met with Supervisor Kaiman and a team of North Hempstead officials to discuss ways the Buildings Department can better serve residents and the building construction sector.

“The meetings have been very productive,” said Philip Weiden, Legislative Liaison for the Long Island Board of Realtors (LIBOR). “While it’s very important to take the concerns of residents into consideration, it’s good to see that the business and real estate communities are involved in helping shape the Town’s building department. I can’t wait to see the final outcome.”

“Supervisor Kaiman is sending a great message”, stated Richard Bivone, Nassau County Chair of the Long Island Business Council.

“It’s the first time in my 27 years in the industry that I’ve seen any elected official reach out to the constituents to try to fix a problem,” Bivone said. “The conference is a major step in creating a Buildings Department where the public can conduct business efficiently and timely.”

The conference is open to the public but seating is limited. Please register by April 24 by calling 311 or going online at www.NorthHempsteadNY.Gov/BuildingsDepartment
