North Hempstead Supervisor to Residents: Recycle Your Unwanted Christmas Trees and Electronics This Holiday Season
North Hempstead, NY– The number one item on the Supervisor’s and Town Board’s wish list this holiday season is for everyone to have a safe and joyous celebration. At the same time, the Supervisor and his administration hold high hopes for another wish topping his holiday list: that residents continue to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Advising residents to avoid being an environmental Scrooge this holiday season, Supervisor Kaiman reminded North Hempstead residents to recycle their used Christmas trees and unwanted electronics.
“Tree Cycling benefits the environment and the community,” Supervisor Kaiman said, noting that old trees are turned into mulch for use in gardening and landscaping. “And recycling your electronic waste is a win, win undertaking,” he said, “freeing up valuable space while keeping damaging materials like lead, mercury and arsenic out of landfills, thus keeping toxins out of our drinking water.”
Town officials also recommend that residents become misers this holiday season by switching to energy-saving Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights, which ultimately lowers electric bills.
Residents can dump energy-gulping Christmas lights every Sunday from 7:30am to 3:30pm until the end of January at 999 West Shore Road in Roslyn, North Hempstead’s residential drop-off site and at the Town of North Hempstead Solid Waste Management Authority (SWMA) 802 West Shore Rd, Port Washington Monday – Friday from 8 am to 4 pm, excluding Holidays.

Arguably, electronics rank among the most popular gift atop many people’s holiday wish list, adult and children alike.
With that in mind, Supervisor Kaiman reminds those fortunate enough to snag that electronic gizmo they’ve been eyeing for months to recycle their unwanted electronic gadgets, whether it’s outdated or just simply seen better days.
Collected electronic waste is hauled off by the town’s EPA certified e-waste recycler, who disassembles the items, salvages the useable parts, separates out potentially damaging materials, and recyclables the balance.
The Town of North Hempstead is able to take the e-waste program to every community through the incredible partnership of the, award-winning School Recycling Partnership Program.
