Town Invites Seniors to Inspirational Workshop for Project Independence

New Cassel, NY – Recognizing that seniors have plenty of inspirational tales to tell, Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman, and the North Hempstead Town Board invite residents 60 and older to share their stories about personal accomplishments, careers and life shaping events at a unique Project Independence workshop.

The May 15 symposium, titled “Life Review”, will be held at North Hempstead’s “Yes We Can” Community Center, and is scheduled to run from 10 am—2 pm.

“This workshop conforms to the social and recreational facets of Project Independence, critically important to seniors as it gives them the ability to connect with their peers and help the generation behind them embrace life as they age,” Supervisor Kaiman said.

A groundbreaking program which is gaining national recognition, Project Independence aims to help seniors maintain their independence as they grow older while enhancing the opportunities for the younger generations to tap into the legacies of their elders.

“Life Review” is an inspirational workshop facilitated by authors and activists Sue Salko and Ron Gross, who are seniors themselves. Long Island residents Salko and Gross are members of the prestigious Columbia University Seminar on Innovation in Education.

“These workshops encourage sharing significant life experiences and life lessons learned,” Salko said. Gross noted that in addition to helping participants “jump-start their personal memoirs, the program can ignite an adventure in self-discovery.” It’s also a priceless “gift for family and friends,” he said.

Salko and Gross are known to many as “the gurus extraordinaire of creative aging.” Salko regularly presents programs for the Great Neck Senior Center, the National Council of Jewish Women, and other organizations. Additionally, she has been a senior advocate for State Senator Kemp Hannon. For twenty years, Gross has conducted the Socrates Salon, gatherings at the Great Neck Library geared to exploring keys to using ones mind to the utmost. He is author of “The New Old,” and 20 other books.

This workshop is paid for by a grant from the Manhasset Community Fund’s Greentree Foundation Good Neighbor Fund.
