Town’s Operation: Clean Sweep to Commence in North Hempstead
Street Sweepers Will Hit Town Roads Starting April 25
North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth announced that starting April 25, North Hempstead Highway crews will be hitting the streets to sweep up the winter debris on Town streets as the annual “Operation: Clean Sweep” gets underway. This two-week initiative is held each spring and aims to sweep every mile of North Hempstead roads.
“The winter leaves the streets full of dirt and debris, which is in part the result of sanding our roads to keep them safe over the winter months,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “That’s why Operation: Clean Sweep is so important! It will make our roads cleaner and safe for motorists and cyclists. This is North Hempstead’s spring cleaning.”
Last year, the Town’s environmentally-friendly bio-fueled street sweepers kept debris out of the Town’s fresh-water catch basins as required by New York State, and gobbled up 5 million pounds of debris, with an even higher total expected this year.
The Highway Department needs the public’s help to make Clean Sweep a success. They ask that residents refrain from parking vehicles on town roads from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. during Operation: Clean Sweep days. The public’s cooperation will ensure that the roads get as clean as possible.
From Monday, April 25 to April 29, all areas NOT within incorporated villages and south of the Long Island Expressway will be swept. From Monday, May 2 to May 6 all areas NOT within incorporated villages and north of the Long Island Expressway will be swept.
