Project Independence Transportation Program

The Town of North Hempstead and your local licensed taxi companies are proud to offer transportation services for non-emergency medical visits and food shopping to senior residents 60+, and disabled residents 21+ who qualify.

  • Food Shopping Taxi Program (no charge for rides)

    • Provided twice a week to local stores, on weekdays only, between the hours of 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

    • If rider has an aide, the aide may ride for free.

  • Medical, dental or treatment appointments, non-emergency.

    • Your rate is deeply discounted each way.

    • Rides available on weekdays, except major holidays.

    • If rider has an aide, the aide may ride for free.

    • Call 311 or 516-869-6311 at least one day in advance to make a PI Taxi reservation. For a next day ride, please call before 4 p.m. Same day rides are not available. 

    • The best time to ride is the middle of the day, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., when taxis are less busy. Please avoid rush hours as delays should be expected. 

  • Town Bus Transportation provided to senior programs within the Town of North Hempstead (limited).

ADA and Title VI Complaint Policy and Procedures

POLICY

The Town of North Hempstead’s Project Independence Transportation Service operates without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age or disability, and in accordance with applicable law. The Town of North Hempstead is committed to complying with the requirements of ADA and Title VI in all of its federally funded programs and activities. Any person who believes he or she has been unlawfully discriminated against as a result of a Project Independence Transportation Service action may contact any of the following to file a complaint.

COMPLAINT PROCEDURES

A written complaint should be made within 30 calendar days of the alleged incident to facilitate a prompt investigation and resolution. The written complaint should be as specific as possible and include the date the incident occurred, names of individuals involved, the facility, programs, services or activities involved, the nature of the problem and a proposed resolution. Include your full name, contact information and best method to reach you.

Complaints should be addressed to ADA Coordinator, 220 Plandome Road, Manhasset, New York 11030, by phone to (516) 869-7712 or by email to any of the Town’s ADA officers: Estefany Garay (garaye@northhempsteadny.gov), Stephen Mazza (mazzas@northhempsteadny.gov), Paula Uhl (uhlp@northhempsteadny.gov) and/or Silmara Marciano (marcianos@northhempsteadny.gov).

If you need an alternative method to provide your complaint, you may contact the ADA Coordinator and either provide a verbal complaint or request information in accessible formats to be able to submit your complaint.

Within 10 days after receipt of the complaint, the ADA Coordinator will contact the complainant, by mail, email, telephone or video conference, to discuss the complaint and to find a resolution. Within 30 calendar days of the discussion, the ADA Coordinator will provide a written explanation on the outcome of the complaint.  A summary of the complaint and its closure will be kept for five years.

If the complainant is not satisfied with the outcome, the complainant, may appeal the decision, within 45 days to New York State Department of Transportation (see below).
