6/30/2017 - Fresh From the Garden

Councilwoman Russell recently attended Magnolia Gardens in New Cassel for an new  ECA program called “Fresh from the Garden”. Fresh from the Garden is a program that provides low-income senior residents Westbury with seasonal fresh produce, nutritional education and cooking demonstrations. The Town of North Hempstead is one of several partners working with the EAC and their nutritional initiative. The program is funded by Bank of American and Long Island Community Foundation and also works in partnership with students from Hofstra University Center for Civic Engagement, who assists with outreach enrollment.

The Program officially started in April at Magnolia Gardens and featured cooking demonstrations, the program will offer monthly distribution of seasonal fresh produce obtained from Long Island Care Food Bank and Local Farmers Markets. On June 28th  the program began with discussions that covered healthy living topics like, shopping and cooking healthy on a limited budget and lowering nutritional risk for chronic disease through a healthy diet. Toward the end of the program fresh fruit and vegetables were given out to the seniors so that they can use what they learned and apply it to their everyday life  . The Town is very grateful for these partnerships and excited to see the program grow.

Community partners for the program include: The Town of North Hempstead, the North Hempstead Housing Authority, Long Island CARES Food Bank, Hofstra University Center for Civic Engagement, Youth operated Farmers Markets, Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, Sustainable Long Island and Northwell Health's Dietetic Internship Program.
