North Hempstead Sponsors 1st Annual Car Free Day Long Island
Manhasset, NY –As part of the Town of North Hempstead’s ongoing “green” effort to reduce their carbon footprint, Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the Town Board recently announced that the Town will be sponsoring the 1st Annual Car Free Day Long Island.
Car Free Day is an international event celebrated every September in which people are encouraged to get around without cars and instead ride a train, bus, bicycle, carpool, subway or walk. This year, Car Free Day will be coming to Long Island for the first time on Friday, September 20, 2013.
Town officials hope that Car Free Day will encourage residents to consider the negative impact of single-occupancy vehicles. By using alternative modes of transportation, such as mass transit, carpooling, bicycles, walking, and telecommuting, we can help reduce traffic, conserve energy, reduce harmful emissions, diminish parking problems, and save money.
“Car Free Day is just one of many initiatives the Town takes part in all year-round that helps preserve our environment,” Supervisor Kaiman said. “I hope that this program lays the groundwork for residents to carpool or use alternative means of transportation when possible.”
To participate in this event, all you have to do is pledge to be car free or car-lite on September 20, 2013 by filling out the pledge form on www.carfreedayli.com. Once you pledge, you will automatically be entered for a chance to win great prizes. If you are currently car-free, you will also get the same opportunity to win prizes by filling out the pledge form.
