Town Honors EOC Student Volunteers at Special Town Hall Reception

North Hempstead, NY
– Continuing the tradition of honoring residents who are making a difference in the Town, Supervisor John Riordan and the North Hempstead Town Board recently paid tribute to 18 Manhasset High School students who voluntarily helped teach the Great Neck/Manhasset Economic Opportunity Council’s (EOC) summer camp.

“One of the great attributes of our Town is that we have some of the country’s most successful schools and some of the most motivated students right here within our borders,” Supervisor John Riordan said, greeting the 18 student honorees and their families, friends and EOC administrators. “We pay tribute to those of you who are doing extraordinary things and we also acknowledge your parents and teachers and all those around you whose support, mentoring and encouragement has helped get you to this point.”

The Manhasset/Great Neck EOC provides services that promote self-sufficiency, self-development and self-esteem through educational, recreational, cultural enrichment and support programs for both children and adults in the Manhasset, Great Neck, Roslyn and Port Washington area.

The six-week full day summer camp provides children 5-13 educational enrichment, recreation, and performing arts classes and activities.

The volunteers helped out in a number of capacities including supervising the campers on field trips, with academics tasks such as reading and writing and with recreational activities.

“I am very proud to have this opportunity to honor you for giving back to your community,” said Town Councilwoman Anna Kaplan. “You are a perfect example of why North Hempstead is a special place.”

Keyshawn Johnson, 16, was cited as outstanding volunteer.

“I learned a lot, including how to be patient,” he said. “They (the campers) taught me a lot, also.”
