Town Announces Rescues on the Water by Bay Constables
North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth announced today that North Hempstead Bay Constables helped rescue a boater from a disabled vessel on July 3rd.
At approximately 11 p.m., Bay Constables Steven Somma and Terrence Doyle were notified by a radio call that a boater was in distress in the area of Hewlett Point. Upon contacting the disabled vessel, it was determined that the engine was damaged by a small fire and was drifting toward rocks inside Hewlett Point. The constables arrived on the scene and towed the vessel away, after the fire was put out by the Port Washington Fire Department. The Bay Constables also disconnected the damaged wiring harness and main batteries after the vessel was towed away. No injuries were reported and the vessel was found to be in compliance.
This was the second rescue in recent weeks by Bay Constable Somma who teamed up with Bay Constable Victor Fuentes on May 26th at 5:15 p.m. as they rescued three kayakers who had flipped over into the water after taking off from Atlantic Outfitters in Port Washington. Town personnel worked with staff from Atlantic Outfitters who came with a boat to help rescue the kayakers. There were no injuries outside of a minor abrasion.
“We are extremely grateful for our Bay Constables’ vigilance in helping these boaters as they navigate North Hempstead waters,” said Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “They have proved once again how vital they are to the safety of boaters in our Town.”
The Town’s Bay Constables monitor Marine Channels 9 and 16, and operate from the Town Dock in Port Washington, New York. For more information please call 311 or 516-869-6311.
