North Hempstead & The Long Island Press Partner in Sponsoring ‘Not In Our Town’ Photo Contest for Students

Entries must illustrate how you stand up to hate in your community or school

North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board announced today that the Town will be partnering with The Long Island Press in sponsoring a photo contest using the anti-hate initiative Not In Our Town (NIOT) as a theme. NIOT addresses issues of hate and bullying, with the goal of building safe, inclusive communities for all. North Hempstead launched its NIOT campaign this spring with the “Not In Our Town: A Unity & Anti-Hate Conference.”

“The Not In Our Town initiative speaks right to the heart of how we feel here in North Hempstead about fighting hate and intolerance, however in order to really effect change we need to get our young people involved,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “We are hoping that our North Hempstead students will be excited about expressing their views on this important issue, as they use photography to illustrate how they stand up to hate in their communities and schools.”

The Long Island Press will feature the winning submissions in the Press, along with an article and will include the photos in an online photo gallery.

"Bullying has become more rampant and widespread among our children — it occurs in our communities and in our schools — and the effects can be catastrophic and long term,” said Joanna Austin, associate publisher of the Long Island Press. “But it doesn’t have to be this way. With programs like NIOT, we can work together to open lines of communication and build safer environments for our children and their parents to learn and thrive.”

Contest rules: Not In Our Town is a movement to stop hate, address bullying, and build safe, inclusive communities for all.

Take a photo showing how you stand up to hate in your community or school. (For example, a school club focusing on diversity, actions you have taken to put an end to hate and any community and unity events that you have attended.)

The photo is open to any Town of North Hempstead resident currently enrolled in elementary, middle or high school and must be taken by that student. Digital photos should be 200 dpi resolution. If you are entering a printed photo, it must be at least 8x10 inches. All entries must be received by January 31, 2018. Winners will be announced March 1, 2018. An awards ceremony recognizing the winners and all who entered will be held on in April 2018, a date TBA.
