North Hempstead, NY – At the most recent Town Board meeting on February 27, Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board approved a $250,000 grant agreement with New York State Department of Transportation through the State Multi-Modal 4 Program for road repaving in New Cassel. The grant funds come through New York State Assemblyman Charles Lavine. The State grant will be combined with Town funding for a total of $380,000 for the repaving of New York Avenue, Sylvester Street, Kinkel Street, Rushmore Street, Swalm Street, Hopper Street and Garden Street.

Also approved at the meeting:
Baywalk Extension: The approval of a contract with Retnauer Design Associations for the design of the extension of the Baywalk Trail in Port Washington. Retnauer Design Associates will be addressing changes to the design of the trail as directed by the Department of State. The Baywalk Trail will stretch from Town Dock to Manorhaven Park and is an extension of Port Washington North Baywalk Trail that has been completed. Construction could occur late 2018 to early 2019.

• Passport Fee Change: The Town Board approved a change in the passport fee, an increase which was required by the U.S. Department of State. The fee for passport processing will go from $25 to $35 beginning April 2.

Radar Speed Signs: The Town will be donating radar-activated speed signs to various incorporated villages around the Town including: Baxter Estates, Great Neck Estates, Kings Point, Munsey Park, North Hills, Old Westbury, Plandome, Plandome Manor, Roslyn Estates, Sands Point and Thomaston. The signs were purchased from a 2016 grant from Former State Senator Jack Martins, through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. The electronic signs will display how fast a driver is traveling and what the speed on the road is, making the driver aware if they are exceeding the speed limit.

Plandome Pond Park: The Town Board awarded Solitude Lake Management for Pond Treatment at Plandome Pond Park in Manhasset.

Acting Comptroller: The Board appointed Director of Finance Jessica Lamendola to serve as interim comptroller while the Town searches for a new comptroller.

Parking spaces restored: The Board rescinded an ordinance that had removed several parking spots along Plandome Road in Manhasset to accommodate a proposed bank. However, the bank decided not to locate there and so the parking spaces are being re-established.

Properties to be demolished: The Town’s Building Department got the go-ahead from the Board to demolish two properties in Westbury that have been determined to be unsafe. The properties: 34 Bramble Lane and 1 Floral Lane, both in Westbury can now be demolished.
