Senator Schumer Joins Supervisor to Advocate for Veterans Affairs Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in North Hempstead

North Hempstead, NY – U.S. Senator Charles Schumer joined North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Town Board members and dozens of local veterans at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington on July 16 as he called for federal funding for a Veterans Affairs Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) to be established in the Town of North Hempstead.

“We have such an active and involved Veteran’s Advisory Committee that has been advocating for an outpatient clinic closer to home in North Hempstead,” Said Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “The Town is an ideal place for a CBOC because of our large veteran population. The clinic would also be complimented by the services provided by our Project Independence, we have a social worker devoted to veteran’s issues and we are able to provide taxis at a very reduced fare for medical visits,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “I am appreciative of Senator Schumer’s advocacy on this important issue. He is always here for us.”

The need for a CBOC comes as the population of veterans grow older and they are not able to make the long drive to the Northport VA or to a clinic based in Valley Stream for medical treatment. According to a letter signed by all North Hempstead elected officials, the need for a CBOC comes as the population of veterans grow older and they are not able to make the long drive to the Northport VA or to a clinic based in Valley Stream for medical treatment.

This letter is the beginning of an advocacy campaign launched by the Town of North Hempstead’s Veterans Advisory Committee (VAC), which has already collected hundreds of signatures.

“We are so grateful to our veterans for their service and it’s our responsibility to make sure that they have medical care as close to home as possible,” Said the Supervisor.
