North Hempstead Reminds Senior Residents About Free Medical and Food Transportation
Town extends free cashless rides throughout duration of pandemic

North Hempstead, NY - Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board remind residents that Project Independence is offering free transportation for medical and food shopping trips throughout the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Town will be paying for all costs associated with Project Independence transportation rides, including the tips for drivers.

"These policies are intended to assist residents as the Town continues its efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus," said Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “We are providing an essential service to our seniors, and we want to do everything we can to help them during this extremely challenging time. We are also aiming to minimize the spread by eliminating the need for riders to hand over any cash to our drivers.”

Starting in April, Project Independence, the Town’s aging-in-place initiative, began covering the costs of transportation fees. The program was extended to help further assist senior residents.

Residents can call 311 or 516-869-6311, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., to make an appointment. Please continue to check the Town’s website or northhempsteadny.gov/coronavirus for the latest updates.
