North Hempstead Offers Senior Residents Free Transportation to Cooling Centers

North Hempstead, NY - Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board announced that Project Independence is offering free transportation to and from its cooling centers at Clinton G. Martin Park and the Port Washington Senior Center on August 11 and 12.

"The Town is encouraging all residents without access to a cool environment, particularly seniors and those at risk for heat-related illness, to use a cooling center during the heatwave," said Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “We are providing this taxi service for free to our seniors, and we want to do everything we can to help them during this extremely challenging time. We are also aiming to minimize the spread of coronavirus by eliminating the need for riders to hand over any cash to our drivers.”

Social distancing protocols remain in effect at all Town facilities. Residents can call 311 or 516-869-6311 to make an appointment.
