Town Adds New Programs at “Yes We Can” Community Center

North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Council Member Viviana Russell, and the Town Board have announced new fall programs that will be held at the “Yes We Can” Community Center in Westbury. The programming schedule includes instructional youth sports lessons for children ages 5 to 12 years old from October 12 to December 20, as well as a ‘Teen Night Out’ event for children ages 12 to 17 years old on October 16. All programs will be held following social distance guidelines.

"We are thrilled to add new youth programming at the ‘Yes We Can’ Community Center. All participants will be asked to wear masks and social distancing guidelines will be followed," said Supervisor Bosworth. "It is important that we keep our children active and engaged, and we hope that they take advantage of these fun new opportunities."

The instructional youth sports lessons are for those with active "Yes We Can" memberships only. Parents are required to remain with 5 to 7 year olds during programs. The lessons include the following:

Soccer: Youth Indoor Instructional Soccer will focus on the fundamental techniques of the game and provide physical conditioning that develops stamina and endurance. Participants will learn skills such as dribbling, passing, ball control, defense and game techniques.

5 to 7 year olds: Saturdays from 9:15 a.m. to 10 a.m.
8 to 10 year olds: Fridays from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
11 to 12 year olds: Fridays from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Basketball: Youth Instructional Basketball will introduce the concept of teamwork and instill self-confidence in participants. Classes will provide total skill development involving all aspects of the game which include dribbling, passing, scoring, and defense.

5 to 7 year olds: Saturdays from 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m.
8 to 10 year olds: Mondays from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
11 to 12 year olds: Mondays from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Volleyball: Youth Instructional Volleyball is designed to offer basic volleyball skills which include the fundamentals of serving, passing, spiking and blocking. Rules and court strategy will also be part of the course as well as scientific foundations of healthy living and play.

8 to 10 year olds: Fridays from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
11 to 12 year olds: Fridays from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Flag Football: Youth Instructional Flag Football will tackle all key aspects of football, the basic rules of the game, and skill development. Members will learn important skills such as throwing, catching, running, and playing defense.

5 to 7 year olds: Saturdays from 11:15 a.m. to 12 p.m.
8 to 10 year olds: Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
11 to 12 year olds: Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Baseball: Youth Instructional Baseball will teach members the fundamentals of baseball as well as the rules of the game. Experienced coaches will teach various skills such as hitting, pitching, fielding, and base running.

5 to 7 year olds: Saturdays from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m.
8 to 10 year olds: Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
11 to 12 year olds: Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Teen Night Out will be held on Friday, October 16 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Activities include healthy living, sports, S.T.E.M., arts, a game room, and a TikTok Challenge.
