Town to Receive Brownfields Grant to Revitalize Land in New Cassel
North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Council Member Viviana Russell and the Town Board recently announced that the Town was awarded a Brownfields assessment grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
“The Town was one of only ten in the country to receive this extremely competitive grant,” said Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “We are grateful to the EPA for awarding us the Brownfields Multi-Purpose grant. The funding will go a long way in helping us continue community outreach and conduct further in-depth environmental studies and assessments that fit the community’s vision for New Cassel.”
The EPA’s Brownfields Program provides assistance in helping to assess, remediate, and safely clean up underutilized properties. This enables properties to be revitalized and put back into use.
“This grant from the EPA is vital in helping us continue our efforts to revitalize the New Cassel community,” said Council Member Russell. “We look forward to taking the next steps which will help stimulate the economy, aid in redevelopment, and bring the community’s vision to life.”
The Town was previously awarded $300,000 in funding by the EPA Assessment Grant as well as $126,000 by New York State Department of State. The highly competitive Brownfields Multi-Purpose Grants in the United States is one of only ten awarded throughout the country. The $800,000 grant has a 5% match by the Town which will allocate a total of $840,000 to further bolster the Town’s efforts for community outreach, environmental assessments, along with clean-up and revitalization efforts in the New Cassel area.
