Town to Premiere Educational Program on Butterflies & Themed Craft Project for Children
North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board are proud to be hosting a special educational episode of NHTV at Home focusing on butterflies in honor of Pollinator Week which is being held this year from June 21 to June 27. The Town will also be offering a free craft project for children to create their own butterfly garden at home.
“In 2018, the Town took the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Pledge which helps bring attention to the declining population of monarchs and other pollinators,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “Butterflies are beautiful creatures. They play a vital role in maintaining our ecosystem, act as a food source for other organisms, and help keep our plants and crops healthy. We hope our residents learn something new about butterflies and enjoy the craft designed to help attract pollinators. This NHTV at Home special will inspire you to support our efforts to help pollinator and butterfly conservation.”
The program will feature the reading of the book The Very Impatient Caterpillar by Ross Burach by Supervisor Bosworth and a presentation by the Science Museum of Long Island about metamorphosis of a butterfly.
As part of the craft project, individual craft kits containing a flowerpot and paints along with a seed packet will be available for pick up on a first come first serve basis at Clinton G. Martin Park at 1601 Marcus Avenue, New Hyde Park from June 15 through June 30. To request and reserve 5 or more kits, please call 311 or 516-869-6311 in advance. Kits are available to residents of the Town of North Hempstead only.
The episode about butterflies will premiere at 4 p.m. on June 15. Tune in on channel 18 or 63 on Cablevision or channel 46 on Verizon along with the Town’s YouTube page at: www.youtube.com/TownOfNorthHempstead.
