Town Hosts Girls on the Run Long Island Program at “Yes We Can” Community Center

North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Council Member Viviana Russell, and the Town Board are proud to announce a partnership with Girls on the Run Long Island at the “Yes We Can” Community Center.

Girls on the Run Long Island is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating an environment where girls can activate their potential and pursue their dreams. It was established in 2012. Since then, the program has expanded to include nearly 2,800 girls in the Long Island chapter and with 2 million girls across the nation.

As part of the program, 15 participants will meet in-person twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The program will run from September 27 through December 5, include 16 lessons led by trained coaches, and culminate with a non-competitive 5K. This year, the program fee has been waived for participants because of a grant from Girls on the Run Long Island.

“We are proudly partnering with Girls on the Run to offer an empowerment program that teaches young girls life skills while building their confidence through physical activity,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “Our staff members at the ‘Yes We Can’ Community Center are being trained as coaches to support the participants as they develop positive social-emotional skills and learn new healthy habits.”

“I am excited that we can offer this program which helps motivate our youth and teach them a lifetime of appreciation for health and fitness,” said Council Member Russell. “We encourage children and their families to enroll and take advantage of this fantastic program.”

Classes may be held outdoors at Martin “Bunky” Reid Park. The fitness programs will follow all New York State COVID-19 health and safety guidelines. Masks will be required. Participants must be members of the “Yes We Can” Community Center and advanced registration is required. For more information, please call 516-876-4430 or 516-876-4431.
