Town Hosted Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall at North Hempstead Beach Park

North Hempstead, NY – Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board were proud to recently host the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall at North Hempstead Beach Park. The Moving Wall, as it is known, is a traveling half-sized replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. The Moving Wall was on display at North Beach Park from Friday, October 15 to Sunday, October 17.

“We are so grateful to the Vietnam Combat Veterans organization for their work across the country and for bringing the Moving Wall to North Hempstead,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “It has always been a priority for me and the Town of North Hempstead to appropriately pay tribute to the servicemen and servicewomen who have fought so bravely to protect our freedom, and it was a privilege to honor their heroism at these extraordinarily poignant ceremonies. We are looking forward to installing a plaque as a commemoration of the hallowed grounds on which the Moving Wall stood at North Hempstead Beach Park.”

A series of events leading to the opening ceremony included a Purple Heart Placement Ceremony, and a dignified transport of the Moving Wall. The Town also hosted a closing ceremony to mark the end of the Moving Wall’s stay in North Hempstead. The Moving Wall was open to viewing 24 hours a day during the duration of its stay at North Hempstead Beach Park.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, New York State Senator Anna Kaplan, Assemblywoman Gina Silliti, Assemblyman Ed Ra, Assemblyman Charles Levine, Nassau County Legislator Ellen Birnbaum, Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, Nassau County Legislator Arnie Drucker, along with local mayors visited the Moving Wall at North Hempstead Beach Park.

The Moving Wall is engraved with the names of the 58,228 Americans who died during the war. Since 1982, the Moving Wall has brought the experience of the memorial in Washington D.C to people who could not travel to the nation’s capital. The Moving Wall first went on display in Tyler, Texas, in October 1984, and since has been traveling the United States from April to November.
