Councilman Ferrara proposes repeal of accessory apartment law

Town of North Hempstead Councilman Angelo P. Ferrara announced today that he is sponsoring legislation to overturn the accessory apartment law enacted by the town on July 29, 2008.

“The resident’s voices have been heard loud and clear,” said Councilman Ferrara. “My office has been flooded by phone calls and emails over the past weeks from people who want this reversed. This is in addition to the hundreds of residents that attended our Town Board meeting on Tuesday evening. The government’s job is to listen to its people and that is exactly what we are going to do.”

Local Law 7-2008 revised the mother-daughter law removing the relationship requirement and allowed up to three unrelated persons to live in a single-family dwelling. It was voted on a public hearing last month and took effect when it was filed with the Secretary of State’s office on August 6.

Ferrara continued, “We have always committed ourselves to doing what is best for our constituents. And I will be pushing to have this abolished as quickly as possible. I have spoken with my colleagues on the board as well as the supervisor who are in basic agreement that this is the best way to proceed.”

A date for this item to be discussed will be Tuesday, September 16 at New Hyde Park Memorial High School.  For further Information, please call 516-869-7794.
