Council Member Lurvey to Host Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises Seminar

North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Council Member Veronica Lurvey in partnership with the New York State Division of Minority and Women’s Business Development, a division of Empire State Development Corporation, are proud to present a Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises Seminar to be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Town Hall located at 220 Plandome Road, Manhasset.

"Minority and women-owned businesses play such an important role in our local communities,” said Council Member Veronica Lurvey. “Hosting workshops and seminars which help foster the success of these entrepreneurs is a way of building a stronger, more equitable local economy for all."

The seminar is aimed at advancing economic opportunities for minority and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs) through state and government contracting. This seminar will focus on New York States’s MWBE Program’s mission and key objectives, including encouraging and assisting state agencies in awarding contracts to MWBEs. Additional focus will spotlight the certification process and promoting MWBE business development through education and outreach.

In December 2021, the Town Board voted to amend its procurement policy to include guidelines for encouraging the participation of Minority and Women Owned Business Enterprises in the Town’s procurement process. This includes using the New York State MWBE database to find certified MWBEs, actively encourage partnerships with MWBE contractors, and ensuring that plans, specifications and RFPs are made available to MWBEs for review.
