Ferrara, Iannarelli introduce Cold War Veterans tax exemption
Bi-partisan bill to aid service men and women in tough times
Just one week after Veterans Day, the Town of North Hempstead Town Board unanimously passed legislation that would allow a partial tax exemption for veterans of the Cold War.
Councilman Angelo P. Ferrara and Receiver of Taxes Rocco Iannarelli announced the amendment to the town code after New Hyde Park resident and veteran Joseph Ingoglia brought this to the town’s attention.
The law would give a 15% reduction of town taxes to qualifying veterans. One must have served in any of the five branches of the armed forces between September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991 for at least one year and was honorably discharged.
“Anything that we can do to help our veterans is something we should all unite behind,” said Councilman Ferrara. “These brave men and women were stationed at various locations around the globe never knowing if or when war would break out. This is the least that we can do to show our thanks.”
Receiver Iannarelli remarked after meeting Mr. Ingoglia, “I was intrigued to learn the plight of veterans who were classified as Cold War veterans, and am glad that this unfair distinction between all those that have served our country has been corrected.”
Those who qualify for the exemption may apply at the county assessor’s office no later than January 2. The exemption will first affect the tax rolls for the 2010 fiscal year. If anyone has any questions, they may contact Councilman Ferrara’s office at 869-7775 or the county assessor’s office at 571-2490.
