Supervisor DeSena Announces Early Completion of Michael J. Tully Parking Lot
North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, the North Hempstead Town Board, and the Department of Parks and Recreation have announced that renovations to the parking fields at Michael J. Tully Park in New Hyde Park will be completed at least three months ahead of schedule.
The project calls for the demolition and milling of all parking fields, installation of a non-settling geo-grid system and repaving and striping. Work was originally planned in several phases with a completion date of Spring 2025, but the project will now see the lot repaved entirely at one stage, resulting in an estimated December 2024 opening.
Parks Commissioner Kelly Gillen explained, “The size and scope of this job require maneuvering numerous pieces of heavy equipment around the lot which disrupts patrons. This change gives us a greater degree of safety and gets it done earlier.”
Town Supervisor DeSena added, “Parking might be inconvenient for a few weeks, but residents will have beautifully renovated facilities far earlier than anticipated. These projects have languished for years, so our goal is always to turn them around as efficiently as possible.”
Town officials noted that there will be alternate parking options available for patrons. They will include:
- Limited parking on the north side of Evergreen Avenue and on Leonard Blvd. Walking access to the park is available from Leonard Blvd. and the main entrance.
- The Employee Parking Lot will be temporarily available to patrons.
- After 4 p.m., there will be limited parking in the New Hyde Park Memorial High School parking lot across the street. North Hempstead Public Safety will be on site to assist.
Residents are asked to park in designated spots only. The Town of North Hempstead will not be responsible for illegally parked cars. If there are no available spots, please wait for a legal spot to park. North Hempstead officials are encouraging residents to walk or carpool to the park as often possible during this time.
During early voting, priority parking will be given to those voting. Special designated parking will be available on Election Day. Please note that parking will become more restrictive during this time. Please adhere to any signage posted.
