North Hempstead Receiver of Taxes Mary Jo Collins to Host Assessment Grievance Workshops

North Hempstead, NY - Town of North Hempstead Receiver of Taxes Mary Jo Collins recently announced that her office will be offering a free series of Property Assessment Grievance Workshops in communities throughout North Hempstead in January and February of 2025.

If you pay taxes on a property in Nassau County, you have the right to appeal your property’s annual assessment set by the Nassau County Department of Assessment. These Notices of Tentative Assessment will be sent out by the County to property owners in January 2025. The values set by the assessments are used to determine your 2026/2027 School Tax bills and your 2027 General Tax bills.

If you disagree with the tentative assessment, you may file a grievance with the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission (ARC) through March 3, 2025. You do not need an attorney to file a grievance; property owners may file on their own.

“This past fall, hundreds of residents took advantage of my free Property Tax Exemption Seminars. That’s when I realized there was a need for a workshop on grieving your home’s assessed value. If you believe your property assessment is not accurate as compared to neighboring homes, I strongly encourage you to come to one of these events and learn how to challenge it.”

Receiver Collins and her staff will be on hand at each seminar to explain the property assessment and grievance processes and will also instruct attendees on how to fill out the grievance application (on paper or online). They will also be available after each presentation to answer questions. Grievance applications will be made available at each presentation. If attendees have already received their most recent Notice of Tentative Assessment, they are encouraged to bring it, if possible.
