Town Begins Final Phase of Landfill Capping

Ten Year, 100 Acre Project Nears Completion

            Port Washington, NY – Supervisor Jon Kaiman, Councilman Fred Pollack, and Public Works Commissioner Gil Anderson announced today that the Town has begun the final phase of landfill capping at the Port Washington L-5 Landfill.  The final segment will be focused on field 3, the source of the hydrogen sulfide odors in the early 1990's.  The capping project marks the end of a ten year, 100 acre project of closing both the L-5 and L-4 landfills.

            "I am happy to announce that this final phase marks the completion to a very long but necessary process," said Supervisor Kaiman.  "This procedure effectively ends any potential contamination of ground water or air quality."

            "This step is great news for our residents," added Councilman Pollack.  "Completion of this project will ensure the safety of the Town's groundwater and aid in preserving our water supply and our environment for future generations."

            The closure process consists of the installation of a series of geosynthetics including and an impermeable liner.  The landfill cap will prevent the further percolation of rain water into the waste mass thereby greatly reducing methane gas and leachate production.  The current construction eliminates the chances of this occurring.
