Town Pays Tribute to Honorees at Annual Women’s History Breakfast

North Hempstead, NY– Town Clerk Leslie Gross and her staff hosted the 19th Annual May W. Newburger Women’s Roll of Honor Breakfast at Harbor Links Club House in celebration of Women’s History Month. She, along with Kim Kaiman, and the North Hempstead Town Board joined hundreds of guests in honoring 14 spectacular women who were inducted this year.

The breakfast is named for North Hempstead’s first female Supervisor, May W. Newburger. Noting that Newburger paved the way for other women, Kim Kaiman said, “In great part it’s because of the leadership and dedication of women like May Newburger that North Hempstead has been designated one of the Best Places to live in America.”

The honorees, all of whom have made positive contributions to the quality of life in their specific community, hail from neighborhoods all across North Hempstead including Albertson, Great Neck, Mineola, Port Washington, Manhasset, Roslyn, Williston Park, New Hyde Park and Westbury.

“This year’s theme focused on the ability of every individual being able to make a difference in their community….the power of one. These women are our stars!” said Clerk Leslie Gross.

The keynote speaker, Executive Director of the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Sandy Oliva, delivered a powerful address about the prevalence of domestic violence and the hope given to those women, children and men who suffer at the hand of the abuser. “It was wonderful and empowering to attend the North Hempstead Women’s History Breakfast, celebrating the power of women to create change in their own lives, in their communities and in the world,” Oliva said. “We are grateful for the support we get from so many of the people of North Hempstead.”

Shirley Romaine shared a poem, as she has done every year since the inception of the breakfast.
