Town Honors 2012 Earth Day T-Shirt Design Contest Participants

North Hempstead, NY– Continuing the Administration’s push to grow environmental stewardship throughout North Hempstead, Supervisor Kaiman and the Town Board recently joined local students, family members, friends and teachers to acknowledge the scores of entries in the annual 2012 Earth Day T-Shirt Design Contest and reward the stand-outs with a certificate of recognition.

“One of the key things we focus on in this Town is the environment,” Supervisor Kaiman said in his opening remarks to the dozens of guests at the April 17 Town Hall reception. “We have an obligation to lead by example and show our constituents that this Earth is precious.”

Although hundreds of students from schools throughout the Town submitted entries, only two were able to take home the grand prize. That honor went to a design co-produced by Arianne Seenauth of New Hyde Park Memorial High School, and Brittany Groveman of The Wheatley School.

As in the past, this year’s winning design will become the official look of the Earth Day t-shirt that the Town distributes at EcoFest this year. Every visitor to the two-day environmental festival at North Hempstead’s 12-acre grounds in Albertson will receive a shirt featuring Arianne and Brittany’s artwork.

Some of the 4,000 t-shirts that will be printed will also be given to participants of upcoming Community Clean Up events throughout the Town.

The 13 honorable mentions – which hailed from Drexel Avenue School, The Wheatley School, Herricks Middle School, Denton Avenue School, New Hyde Park Memorial High School, Great Neck South High School, and Weber Middle School – in addition to the two winning t-shirt designers, were presented with a certificate of recognition at the reception prior to the Town Board meeting.

Co-winner, seventh-grader Arianne Seenauth, 12, said her passion to preserve Mother Earth, served as inspiration for her contribution to the winning design.

“It feels great to know that thousands of people will be wearing a shirt that I helped design,” she said. “Hopefully, it will help to make the Town a greener place.”
