Roslyn, NY– Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North Hempstead Town Board ‘cut the ribbon’ on the new Project Independence Resource Room on Wednesday, April 25 at the Headquarters of the Department of Services for the Aging (DOSA).
The Resource Room, which is stocked with hundreds of informational brochures, a CCTV magnifier for those with low vision, computers with internet access, and DOSA support staff on hand, is located at 47 Old Westbury Road, Roslyn Heights.
“The new Resource Room is a symbol of the larger goal here in North Hempstead to provide our seniors with as much information as possible so they can live healthier and happier lives,” said Supervisor Jon Kaiman. “I applaud both the Project Independence staff and members of our community who helped to make the Resource Room a reality.”
The Resource Room holds informational brochures on topics such as health and mental health services, homecare, elder-law, estate planning, residential programs, and more. A committee comprised of community volunteers was instrumental in the setup.
“We cannot be thankful enough for the time and effort given by our community volunteers,” said Councilwoman Lee Seeman. “Project Independence would not be the national model that it is today without the help from our local community.”
Project Independence was created to help seniors remain in their homes with safety and dignity. Project Independence gives seniors greater access to visiting nurses, social workers, handymen, and taxis for medical visits and shopping, and by adding recreational and educational programs.
