TNH Appoints New Commissioner to Department of Services for the Aging-Project Independence Post
North Hempstead, NY– North Hempstead’s groundbreaking “aging in place” initiative, Project Independence, has become a national model since it launched in 2004, setting the standard for helping the growing senior population live more vibrant, healthy, independent lives in their own homes.
Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North Hempstead Town Board announced recently the Department of Services for the Aging (DOSA)-Project Independence will soar to the next level under the leadership of newly appointed Commissioner Caisy Meyers.
Meyers, a community organizer during the formative period of Project Independence helped lay the foundation for the program, which is now attracting both regional and national attention.
“Caisy’s diligence, her passion for details, her empathy for others and her efforts in helping launch Project Independence coupled with her intimate knowledge of the Town of North Hempstead and senior programs make her the ideal candidate for this position,” said Supervisor Jon Kaiman.
Meyers, who prior to being picked on May 29th to head Project Independence was the Deputy Chief of Staff for the Town of North Hempstead, said her long term goal is to continue steering the innovative senior program towards becoming the standard for independent senior lifestyle.
“My immediate objectives are to double the number of members in our program, complete town-wide network of locations, fine tune existing programs and increase awareness,” Meyers said. “I am honored to have been given the opportunity to help lead what has become one of the Town’s flagship initiatives.”
Meyer’s new role marks her second stint with Project Independence. She was the original Director of Project Independence in its early days when the NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) was first established.
