North Hempstead to Host First “Trashion” Show

North Hempstead, NY– Greening the environment has topped Supervisor Jon Kaiman’s list of priorities since he first took office. Green initiatives such as the Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (S.T.O.P.) event, the school E-Waste collection effort and the School Recycling Partnership Program are just a few of the administration’s hallmark initiatives designed to help young people become stewards of the environment.

Now, with the Town’s annual recycled art contest becoming a mainstay, Supervisor Kaiman and the North Hempstead Town Board recently announced another green initiative linking art and the environment: North Hempstead’s first ever “Trashion” show.

The “Trashion” show will feature apparel designed and created by students from the nine school districts participating in the School Recycling Partnership Program.

“Not only does this provide students with a fun and exciting way of displaying their creativity, but it also helps to protect the environment and promote environmental sustainability,” said Supervisor Kaiman.

Scheduled for January 9 at the recently-opened Yes We Can Community Center in Westbury, the “Trashion” show will feature clothing designed and made by students who will model their creations on the runway. The event, which kicks off at 6:00 pm, will be emceed by artist and environmental educator Nancy Judd of Recycle Runway.

Chief Sustainability Officer Fran Reid, Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Damon Gersh Founder of HEARTS Port Washington help judge the various fashion accessories submitted for entry into the “Trashion” show portion of the Recycled Art contest.

Students from throughout the Town designed clothing pieces that will be featured in the first annual “Trashion” show.
