Town and Manhasset Crew Team Clean Up Hurricane Sandy Debris in Port Washington

Port Washington, NY – Conforming with Supervisor Jon Kaiman and his administration’s commitment to preserve the environment, North Hempstead recently teamed up with at scores of members from the Manhasset Crew Team along with community volunteers to clean up North Hempstead Beach Park shoreline.

The April 6th clean-up of May Newburger Cove (formerly Hempstead Harbor) was organized primarily to clear debris from the fragile ecosystem in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. Aside from being an eyesore, the waste littering the area was inhibiting the growth of native plants and foliage that contribute to the health of the shoreline marshes and wetlands.

"The Town Board and I were very impressed by the magnitude of the community’s involvement in cleaning up the shoreline," said Supervisor Kaiman. “Not only was this a great opportunity for friends and families to come out together and enjoy the natural beauty of our shoreline, but it was also a fitting occasion for residents to help preserve the environment and the Town’s enviable quality of life.”

The cleanup was accomplished in two separate shifts and lasted roughly four hours. Town officials estimate that over 50 garbage bags worth of storm-related debris was collected, in addition to countless amounts of additional waste such as road signs, plastic bags, Styrofoam, etc.

If you would like to organize a clean-up in your community, first identify an area in the community that is prone to litter. If you have difficulty finding a site, contact your Town Councilperson who can assist you in finding a designated location. The Town of North Hempstead will supply clean-up materials, such as trash bags and gloves for your clean-up as well as Earth Day t-shirts for all of your volunteers. After that, make a plan for publicizing the event and recruit volunteers. If you have any questions or need further assistance, just call 311.
