First S.T.O.P. Event of 2013 Breaks Collection Records

North Hempstead, NY – Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North Hempstead Town Board are proud to announce that the first Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (S.T.O.P.) event of 2013 at Tully Park on April 6th was a remarkable success.

Throughout the day, 976 cars came to the event, which disposed of 9.5 Tons of E-Waste, 1,200 pounds of pharmaceuticals, nearly 6 tons of shredded paper, and more than a ton of clothing and household items.

This year’s April 6th event collected approximately double the amount of shredded paper and pharmaceuticals of any event that was held last year.

“One of the goals of my administration has been to recognize potential threats to our environment,” said Supervisor Kaiman. “The improper disposal of household hazardous products can have a devastating effect on the health and safety of our Town for now and future generations. This is why we offer residents this environmentally friendly way to dispose of household hazardous waste. Judging by the success of this program, our residents are clearly taking a hands-on approach to protecting our environment.”

The Town of North Hempstead partnered once again with Big Brothers Big Sisters at this S.T.O.P. event. They accepted gently used and working clothes, stuffed animals, electronics, toys, and more.

The next S.T.O.P. program event will be held Saturday, June 8th at North Hempstead Beach Park at 9:30am.
