Town Reminds Residents of Snow Removal Procedures to Maximize Efficiency
North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board Members would like to remind residents of some snow removal procedures for the upcoming winter season that will maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the Town’s snow plowing. The Town’s Highway crews begin plowing following at least 4 inches of snowfall.
“It is important that we all work together to ensure that the Town plows and highway crews are able to do their job and that our roads and communities are safe during a winter storm,” said Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “Just being aware of a few tips will help ensure that our roads are plowed with maximum effectiveness.”
Residents can help by:
• Removing their cars from the street before, during and after a snow storm to ensure that plows are able properly clean the roads.
• Please understand that during plow operations, snow will be deposited at the bottom of driveways. This is unavoidable and may occur several times during a storm. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.
• Do not shovel snow from your driveway and sidewalks back onto the roads after the snow plows have been by. Please shovel the snow onto your property, not the road.
• Don’t leave your house during a snow storm unless absolutely necessary. When you and your car become stuck or stranded on our streets it makes the job more difficult for our crews to plow our roads.
After a snow fall:
• Under the Town Code, every resident in charge of any property within the Town is required to clear the snow and ice from sidewalks in front their property at least four hours after snow has stopped, except between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
• Residents are also asked to clear snow and ice from any fire hydrant near their property.
• Residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors to see if they need any help.
• To report roads that have not been plowed, please call our 311 Call Center at 311 or (516) 869-6311.
The Town has also issued the following winter safety reminders for businesses and owners of multi-residential properties:
• If you are a commercial property owner or the owner of a multi-residential property adjacent to a fire hydrant, you are required under the Town Code to remove snow and ice from around the hydrant for a distance of two feet, and between the sidewalk and curb within four hours after the snowfall has ended, except between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
• The Town Code also states that businesses must keep handicap parking spots usable for parking purposes.
• Even if a business is closed after the snow storm, merchants are still responsible for clearing the sidewalks.
• Commercial property owners must remove snow from sidewalks and from around fire hydrants, as well.
