Redistricting
Every ten years, the Town of North Hempstead participates in a councilmanic
redistricting process based on the results of the U.S. Census Bureau’s Decennial
Census data. Chapter 15A of the Town Code directs the Town to revise the
boundaries of the existing council districts where the federal census indicates
the districts do not contain a substantially equal number of inhabitants. On
January 20, 2022, the Town Board amended Chapter 15A of the Town Code to read
“the Town Board must revise each district’s boundaries no later than twelve
months after publication of the results of the 2020 federal census.” This
extended the Town Board’s time to make appropriate redistricting changes for an
additional six months, to August 12, 2022.
According to the 2020 federal census, which was released on August 12, 2021, the
Town of North Hempstead’s population grew by 11,317 people to 237,639. This is a
5% increase from the 2010 census which listed the Town’s population as
226,322.
In furtherance of a nonpartisan process, the Town of North Hempstead Town Board
voted to create the Nonpartisan Temporary Redistricting Commission on February
17, 2022. The Commission is tasked with conducting at least three public
hearings throughout the Town of North Hempstead and providing a final report to
the Town Board no later than May 30, 2022.
