Planning and Environmental Protection

The Department of Planning & Environmental Protection is primarily responsible for land use regulation, environmental impact review, historic landmarks preservation, and public transportation issues. In addition to performing technical reviews of all major commercial, multi-family and institutional development proposals, the Department participates in the implementation of transportation, environmental and other capital projects as well as any real estate transactions involving town-owned land. The Department oversees the operations of the Board of Zoning Appeals, Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission, and represents the Town on the Manhasset Bay and Hempstead Harbor Protection Committees.
